Houseboat

This electric solar-powered houseboat is designed for permanent residential use on European waterways. Developed for a couple wishing to live aboard year-round, it combines energy autonomy, everyday comfort and river navigation capabilities in a vessel nearly 17 meters long. Its development is driven by the specific constraints of inland waterways, where clearance limits, existing infrastructure and the need for high autonomy directly influence the project’s architectural choices.

Architecture

The boat’s design is directly inspired by the constraints encountered on European river waterways.  The chamfered roof complies with the height restrictions imposed by bridges and infrastructure, while maintaining balanced proportions and a distinctive visual identity. The commitment to reducing environmental impact also guided the construction choices. The hull, constructed from marine plywood combined with a bio-based epoxy resin and flax fibers, meets the structural requirements of naval construction while incorporating more natural materials suited for long-term residential use. The catamaran architecture follows the same design philosophy. It increases the living space without increasing draft while providing the stability required for low-speed navigation and extended periods aboard. Particular attention is given to weight distribution and the integration of technical systems to ensure consistent behaviour under the various specific conditions of river navigation. This holistic approach extends to the yacht’s energy, with an electric propulsion system combined with photovoltaic power generation and optimized management systems. The entire system is sized to meet both domestic needs and the boat’s operational requirements, allowing several days of self-sufficiency without any external connection. Designed for year-round living, the boat also adopts a thermal approach similar to that of a contemporary home. Enhanced insulation, complemented by a thermodynamic water heater and  wood-burning stove located in the center of the living area, reduces energy consumption while maintaining a consistent level of comfort  regardless of outdoor conditions.

Layouts

The interior layout is organised around principles commonly found in contemporary home. The fully flush main deck forms the heart of the project, creating a natural continuity between the interior living spaces and the forward and aft terraces. Large sliding glazed doors extend the living areas directly outdoors, allowing the terraces to become a daily extension of the living room during periods at anchor or slow cruising. Permanently accessible, the rooftop complements this layout, offering an additional space designed for relaxation and enjoying the landscape. Designed for a couple living aboard full-time while retaining the ability to accommodate occasional guests, the interior layout clearly distinguishes shared living areas from private spaces. The owner’s cabin benefits from its own en-suite bathroom, while a versatile room can be configured as needed as an office, a guest bedroom, or a guest area. The materials and interior finishes reinforce this residential approach with sustainable, understated choices adapted to intensive long-term use. Every space is organised around a clearly defined function, combining functionality, everyday comfort, and a sense of spaciousness on board.
