Coche

The Coche reinterprets river living through an approach that brings together residential comfort, energy self-sufficiency and low-impact mobility within a single project. Designed for charter use, it allows novice guests to quickly familiarise themselves with the boat without compromising the qualities of a true living environment. Its catamaran architecture provides the stability and space needed for extended stays, while its aesthetic draws on the traditional coche river boats to create a warm, contemporary silhouette. Designed to move with the rhythm of the waterways, it maintains a constant relationship with the surrounding landscape and offers a calm and intuitive cruising experience.

Architecture

The desire to sustainably reduce the boat’s environmental footprint guides many of the design choices. Electric propulsion is combined with photovoltaic power generation designed to meet both domestic needs and those associated with navigation, providing several days of autonomy without an external power source. This commitment to sustainable mobility is further enhanced with the integration of a small wastewater treatment system, while carefully selected bio-based insulation, combined with a thermodynamic water heater and reversible heating system, helps limit energy consumption while ensuring consistent comfort year-round. This approach is supported by a construction strategy in which each material has been selected for the qualities it brings to the programme. The HDPE floats are designed to withstand the demands of intensive rental use thanks to their impact resistance, ease of repair, and naturally antifouling properties. They support an aluminium structural platform designed to connect the hulls while simplifying the construction of the overall structure. Above this platform, the living module follows the principles of wood-frame construction, providing an efficient, durable and straightforward-to-build envelope while bringing the boat’s quality living experience closer to that of a contemporary home. The solid wood cladding extends this construction logic into the architectural expression. The curved roof, meanwhile, responds to the constraints of the river network, complying with its most demanding clearance requirements while naturally enhancing the structure’s overall rigidity and water runoff. The exposed structural roof frame extends this architectural concept into the living spaces, where it contributes to the project’s warm and distinctive character.

Layouts

The interior layout follows the principles of a contemporary home, prioritising continuity between uses rather than a sequence of separate rooms. The living area combines the lounge and galley within a largely open volume, extended by a large glazed opening that visually dissolves the boundary with the outdoor terrace. This continuous relationship between interior and exterior naturally extends both cruising periods and time spent moored. The private spaces are organised around two double cabins, each with its own en-suite bathroom. An additional Pullman berth completes each cabin, allowing the boat to accommodate occasional additional guests while maintaining a level of comfort suited to extended stays aboard. This arrangement balances guest capacity with quality of life, preserving generous volumes for residential use. Forward, the pergola extends the curve of the roof to create a sheltered outdoor area incorporating a lounge and Nordic bath. Its design filters the light without interrupting the connection with the surrounding landscape, offering a relaxing space throughout the year. From the rooftop, wide views extend across the riverbanks, turning the space into a a natural lookout over the waterways. The interior atmosphere draws on the presence of timber, generous openings and the exposed roof structure to evoke a residential architectural environment rather than that of a conventional boat. Each design choice contributes to eliminating the usual constraints of life aboard, creating a more serene experience in which living spaces, navigation and landscape form a continuous whole.
